Newborn portrait shoots rarely go exactly as planned and Aren’s shoot a few days ago was no exception. Mom says he’s typically an easy baby, full of sleepy smiles and rarely fussy. But babies will be babies and it may have been the strange place, the strange people or it may have just been a fussy day but Aren wanted nothing to do with sleep or happy smiles. In the end, we did manage to get a few sleepy shots of him cocooned in his favourite blanket. We’ve scheduled a second shoot for Monday to capture some more newborn poses so be sure to check back at the beginning of the week for more photographs of this little cutey.

Please note that I’ve rebranded my business, built my new portfolio and created a new website – including integrating my blog. This means more changes to come. Soon I’ll be deleting my WordPress.com page and concentrating my blog on my website. A few weeks ago, I had the distinct pleasure of photographing my friend’s beautiful newborn daughter.  As every newborn photographer knows, the best laid plans last until the baby arrives. With the exception of perhaps five minutes in the middle of the session, this wide awake baby girl wasn’t going to persuaded to sleep. The world is too interesting and she didn’t want to miss a moment. She was a few weeks old and full of smiles and giggles for the camera – already finding her personality.

It’s been a long time in coming but I’m finally ready.

At the beginning of the new year, I decided to expand my photography business into fine art portraits. It’s a whole new world of expectant mothers, newborns, babies and families. It’s been a long road with many challenges but I’ve rebranded my business, built my portfolio and created a new website – including integrating my blog. This means more changes to come. Soon I’ll be deleting my WordPress.com page and concentrating my blog on my website. I’d love for you to join me over at suzismart.com – you can easily subscribe to my updated blog at the bottom of the page or when commenting on a story. I hope that you’ll join me on my journey into this exciting new world.

Splash down during mating season at my favourite park in Brentwood, Calgary, Alberta.

On Saturday morning we went to Bowmont Park, a great local natural park, with our son. Not only did we have a great little toddler hike, but we also spent quite a while observing a number of different species of ducks including this mallard duck.

I was out for a walk the other morning when an unusual caw behind me attracted my attention. High in the tree above me was this bird, which further research makes me think it is a Merlin (Falco columbarius).

Last weekend, a couple dozen ducks had congregated along the edge of the Bow River at the end of the Waterfall Valley Trail in Bowmont Park. I was lucky to get several shots before they took off down the river in response to my two-year old’s squeal of delight of seeing them.

On Monday, my son and I had a wonderful hike through one of our natural parks in Calgary.
